The European Breeders' Fund was established in 1983 The original participating countries were France, Great Britain, and Ireland. They were joined in 1986 by Germany and Italy and in 1989 by Switzerland. The Fund was established as a European counterpart to the Breeders' Cup scheme which was being set up in the USA for the purpose of revitalizing the American racing industry through revenue being drawn from stallion fees.
